Our Story

Why I started the
Women’s Surf community

‘There were few female elders for me to learn from in my early surfing years in Ireland and I’m excited for the new generation to move into a more supported and grounded space to evolve their surfing with strong women and men around them.’

When I started surfing I wasn’t enamoured with surf culture environments in general. There were aspects I loved such as meeting fellow water humans that loved the wild as much as I do and witnessing moments of heart and greatness that people experience while surfing a wave. There was too much that felt out of balance however and didn’t honour the presence of women and those who don’t surf to hustle or compete.

The women’s space began with my women’s intermediate surf coaching sessions and has evolved into something much bigger. That’s why we’ve expanded the original Women’s Surf Series and created our Rebelle Surf Sisters Community and She Surf Ireland.

INCLUSIVITY

We are the only female led surf school in the West of Ireland and we are actively creating a more inclusive space that teaches and honours EVERYONE. There is a huge imbalance in global surfing culture that has historically excluded females, those who are not heterosexual, diverse ethnicities, varying body types and anyone else that doesn’t fit into the mainstream surf culture narrative.

We aim to represent and create more visibility for women and girls in particular, surfing in Ireland. Check out our She Surfs Ireland Instagram community page!

Our lessons and camps are open to everyone and our women’s series groups are a women’s space specifically.

The main ethos of this community is to step away from the glamourised barbie sex driven surf culture and make space for a more inclusive and diverse stream of women to be seen and heard in their fullness. Not necessarily focused on just performance and goals but also expression and presence.

OUR STORY

Space

More than anything it’s a space to be ourselves. I’m about providing a space, visibility and coaching for all women and girls to experience, feel confident and connected to themselves with strong boundaries and tools for self-awareness. All in the atmosphere of the Ocean.

Self-enquiry and growth is often portrayed as heavy and difficult but I don’t believe it has to be. I believe it’s quite a spontaneous experience inseparable from nature.

There’s often a mindset that if we throw enough women at an inequal territory it will sort itself out and we can carry on with the game. I disagree. What I believe needs to occur is a radically honest look at the undercurrents and programmes behind the group dynamics in place out there in the water and on land. Only then can we truly create a new healthier foundation. This is not limited to surf culture!

Throughout the year there will be free socials, women’s surf camps and workshops where I will be teaming up with other amazing people to bring you some unique adventures. Watch this space or get in touch if you would like to book in as a group. We’re still running the women’s surf sessions twice a week but now there’s also a community space. We’ll also be offering workshops online and in person with incredible tools we have gathered over our twenty years of exploring this subject.

Great beginner session today with Melanie and Shane. We got little pointers to improve your technique every wave. They got the group chatting and relaxed so everyone was encouraging each other to pop up on waves. Definite recommend!!!!

Really enjoyable lesson with Anne today, myself and my 12 y/o son. Clear instruction, positive feedback and plenty of humour. Rebelle accommodated us at the last minute and were very helpful. I’d highly recommend.

I had such a brilliant time surfing with Rebelle surf. I have very little experience but Mel made sure to help me and give me great directions. She’s a great instructor and had all the equipment for everyone who needed it.
