Fiona Donnellan surfing

Fiona Donnellan

Fiona, owner of award winning @sustainablePR and co founder of @girloutdoormag currently lives in Sligo Town with her boyfriend Mark and mainly surfs Strandhill. She’s a triathlon machine and you’ll often spot her running with her new rescue dog (Rón) or sea swimming. Super supportive of other women and an all round inspiring human she champions all things that show love for our environment.

‘The first time I surfed was in Achill as a kid on a summer camp. I use the word ‘summer’ loosely because in my memory it rained for 5 days straight. I would have been 7/8, but it wasn’t until I got older that I took it up properly. I got my first board when I lived in Australia and got more into it.

Surfing definitely helps me step outside my comfort zone, which I need sometimes as I’ve a tendency to stay perfectly safe in my comfort zone. So it gives me that push, that adrenaline rush.

Magic Board – I ride a 7’10 Indio Endurance Egg board and I love it. It’s perfect for me and the style of surf I want to focus on – love a fun day on a foamy too!

Fave Waves

Small, clean. I only recently surfed a reef and it was so nice to have that consistency too. I love summer days, but also love a freezing cold day in winter when you really have to work for your waves. The paddle out might be brutal, but the tea afterwards is always sweet.

Surf pros

Friendships. I moved to Sligo from Dublin, went to a couple of Rebelle Surf lessons and boom I had a friend group of awesome like-minded women.

Surf cons

Surf guilt: When you know there are good waves and you should be out there but you feel lazy and opt to stay indoors. That guilt is real.

What do women bring to the line up?

Comradery, belief. I always feel more comfortable when I see gals in the line up, it gives me a sense of peace.

What is missing in the line up?

Friendly hellos. Manners sometimes.

Best comedy kook surf moment?

OMG so embarrassing, I said I’d help my friend put fins on her new board, I confidently put them in backwards, sent her on her way. I still cringe.

pearls of wisdom

There’s always a solution. A mantra I live by.
