We are not a women’s only school, Far from it! We’re here for everyone and host mixed lessons and camps all year round. One of the reasons we also host women’s groups is to address and balance the very real reasons women and girls have not been engaging with surfing.

Alongside these spaces we provide experiences for kids, families, adults, groups, special occasions and schools. At the moment there is a need for women specific coaching groups, that may not be the case in the future with more awareness and balance on the scene. 

There is a narrative in the surf world that pumps images of limited body types, races, ages and gender. Basically young, white, fit males and over sexualised images of young, thin, white women. Usually blonde! The representation of kids in surfing isn’t much better. Girls are represented more than they have been but usually with an undertone of surprise that a girl is ripping and confident. It’s very exclusive, often hailing an ability to dominate each other and conquer nature in a macho format. This leaves very little room for any other narrative. What about older women and men, families of different race and sexuality even?

We aren’t here to take on the mountain, just do our bit in an area we are passionate about and experienced in. For us it’s about creating more visibility and accessibility for women and girls in Ireland. Our women’s spaces are open to anyone that identifies as female.

There are more women and girls than there have ever been surfing and the line up is improving slowly but the culture is far from balanced in terms of age, ethnicity, body types and surfing styles. Frankly the mainstream surf culture is a little toxic and outdated. That’s why we’re here! 

The paradox is that the surfing was originally a very sacred joyful art involving the whole community and often led by women and men. A deeply spiritual practice, nurturing respect and love for nature, one that we feel is crucial to revive and re-establish in all the surf line-ups.
